Training/Services

If you are completely new to flight training, I can help you get your student pilot certificate, which you can get as early as 16 years old. This is not necessary for initial flight training, but it is required to fly solo, which is a requirement for the Private Pilot Certificate.

If you are looking into flight training, one of the first things you should do is get medically qualified. You have several options, depending on your aviation goals. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

You also will have to fill out this form. There is a preferred online version that I will walk you through filling out, as this is an essential pilot “portal” you will use throughout your training: IACRA.

FAA Student Pilot FAQs

The Private Pilot Certificate (PPL) is the most basic and practical pilot certificate you can get for personal use. While we will get into the legal privileges and limitations, this certificate allows you to carry people and property for personal use (no compensation). The training consists of fundamentals of flying, understanding weather, physiological factors, and basic airmanship skills.

Requirements

  • Be at least 17 y/o
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Hold a current third-class FAA medical certificate
  • Receive training and endorsements for the written and practical tests
  • Meet aeronautical experience requirements
  • Take and pass the written and practical (oral and flight)

Aeronautical Experience

  • 40 hours flight time (22 hours single-engine airplane)
    • 20 hours flight instruction
    • 10 hours solo flight training

60 – 80 hours is the average amount of time it takes for most students to get their PPL. This could take 3-8 months, depending on weather, student availability, and student ability.

$14,400 – $19,200 is the base estimate, including $200/h plane rental and $40/h flight instruction. This does not include ground instruction.

An instrument rating will allow you to fly in weather below visual flight rule (VFR) minimums. Ratings essentially add privileges and qualifications to your certificate. The goal of instrument training is to be able to navigate when you can’t see, as well as the legal, environmental, and phsyiological factors associated with that.

Requirements

  • Hold a PPL or be concurrently applying for one
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Hold a current third-class FAA medical certificate
  • Receive training and endorsements for the written and practical tests
  • Meet aeronautical experience requirements
  • Take and pass the written and practical (oral and flight)

Aeronautical Experience

  • 50 hours XC PIC (10 hours airplane)
  • 40 hours actual/simulated instrument
    • 15 hours dual

Flying full-time and receiving ground instruction, instrument training can take 2-4 months. Estimate around $9,000 (can be less with simulator time) including $200/h plane rental and $40/h flight instruction.

The Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL) allows you to be paid to fly. This is the natural next step from Private and Instrument if you are seeking a career in aviation. You will go back to the airmanship skills you built during Private Pilot training and sharpen them.

Requirements

  • Hold a PPL
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Hold a current applicable medical certificate
  • Receive training and endorsements for the written and practical tests
  • Meet aeronautical experience requirements
  • Take and pass the written and practical (oral and flight)

Aeronautical Experience

  • 250 hours flight time
    • 100 hours powered aircraft (50 hours airplane)
    • 100 hours PIC (50 airplane)
      • 50 hours XC (10 airplane)
    • 20 hours including
      • 10 hours instrument (5 single engine airplane [SEL])
      • 10 hours complex, turbine, or TAA (land)
      • 3 hours SEL within 2 months of practical test
    • 10 hours solo or duties of PIC in SEL

Flying full-time and receiving ground instruction, commercial pilot training can take 3-8 months. Estimate for this certificate is around $25,000 at $200/h for plane rental and $40/h for instruction.

Giving flight reviews (BFRs) and IPCs is at my discretion.

Flight Review

Minimum 1 hours ground, 1 hour flight. This can increase based on my evaluation and your abilities.

Instrument Proficiency Check

Ground and flight portion of varying time.

$50/h for ground instruction and flight instruction + $200/h plane rental (unless you supply airplane).

If you need a BFR or IPC, please contact me with more details.
